Earlier today, the OECD released their latest Product Market Regulation Indicators (PMRI) survey. As a new Ministry with a big job to do, we are looking forward to further investigating the opportunities that the survey results have highlighted for New Zealand.
The PMRI is a survey that focuses on regulatory barriers. The survey, that comprises about 1000 questions, assesses the degree to which policies and regulation promote or inhibit competition in product markets.
The PMRI results include New Zealand and cover both indicators of regulation that affects the whole economy and sector-specific indicators. The first survey was conducted in 1998 and has been released every five years since then.
Looking at the PMRI overall, New Zealand’s total economy-wide score has continued to improve, but not as fast as that of other countries. The results highlight that New Zealand can do better.
We have an important role to play in supporting the improvement of New Zealand’s regulatory landscape, and investigating areas where we can improve our regulatory performance. The PMRI survey results are a useful marker for potential areas of future focus.
