About regulatory reviews

We want rules and regulations to enable New Zealanders to do more – to lead to a more productive use of people’s time, and better outcomes for all.

What is a regulatory review?

Regulatory reviews enable the Ministry for Regulation (the Ministry) to:

  • engage with people impacted by regulation, and
  • identify how existing regulation could or should be improved.

When we conduct a review, it may be broad and look at a whole sector, or it may look at a specific aspect of a regulatory system instead.

Future reviews

The Ministry will focus on regulatory issues that are of national significance. We’re currently developing a framework to assist in the selection and prioritisation of future sector reviews.

Engaging with a review

Each regulatory review will be developed with a tailored engagement plan that will take particular audiences and stakeholders into consideration. Most sector reviews will be targeted, to ensure the individuals and organisations affected by specific rules and regulations have the opportunity to engage in the process.
